The good stuff

Scanning barcodes worked surprisingly well - as long as the lighting was decent and the code wasn’t smudged. I had one book where the barcode was faded, but Bookpedia let me search ten different library databases and online sources. It found the right one in under a minute. The full-screen cover view? Nice touch - scrolling through all my book covers feels satisfying, like I’m flipping through a real shelf. And I didn’t expect to love the Spotlight integration, but typing “Jane Austen” into Spotlight pulled up my entire collection of her books instantly. Also, the wishlist feature linked to Amazon? A small thing, but I’ve added five titles I want to buy, and it’s easy to check off once I do. The stats - like how many books I’ve read this year - are basic but useful for casual tracking.

The not-so-good

It doesn’t sort by author last name, which bugged me more than I expected. If you’re someone who organizes books alphabetically by surname, this will annoy you. Also, the app doesn’t handle multi-volume sets super well - each volume shows up separately unless you manually group them. And while the iSight scanning works most of the time, it fails if the barcode is crooked or the light’s bad. You end up repositioning the book like you’re doing a museum exhibit. Not a dealbreaker, but it’s inconsistent. Oh, and there’s no export to CSV or PDF - just images, which isn’t great if you want to back up your data. Still, it’s free, so I can’t complain too much.

Bottom line

If you’re a Mac user with a growing physical book collection and you want something simple, free, and functional, Bookpedia for Mac - Download for Mac is worth a try. It’s not perfect, but it’s better than nothing. Skip it if you need advanced sorting or syncing. But if you just want to see your books in one place and maybe impress your friends with your stats, go ahead and download it. It’s a solid little tool for the price - which is zero.
