Croc Legend of the Gobbos for Nintendo Switch

I’ve been on a bit of a retro platformer kick lately, mostly because I miss games where you just *jump* and *climb* without needing a tutorial. Croc Legend of the Gobbos for Nintendo Switch fit that itch perfectly. It’s not flashy, but it’s got heart - and honestly, it’s one of the more satisfying remasters I’ve played in a while. The game drops you into a world where a green crocodile named Croc has to rescue his fuzzy Gobbo family from Baron Dante and his goons. Sounds silly? Yeah, but it works.

The good stuff

First off, the visuals are a real upgrade from the original 1997 version. The cartoony aesthetic is still there, but now everything’s sharper, with better textures and lighting that actually makes the levels feel alive. I was especially impressed by how smooth the controls are now - jumping, backflipping, climbing ladders… it all feels tighter than before. One level had me dodging spinning sawblades in a mine shaft, and I barely missed a single one thanks to the responsive input. And then there’s the Crocipedia - this little digital museum packed with concept art, old demos, developer interviews, and even alternate soundtracks. I spent nearly an hour just browsing through it. For anyone who’s ever wondered what went into making these older games, this is gold.

The not-so-good

But hey, it’s not perfect. Some of the platforming sections - especially in later levels - still feel punishing. The physics can be slippery, and some jumps require pixel-perfect timing. I died three times in a row trying to clear one narrow ledge near the end of the ice cavern. Also, the boss fights haven’t aged well. They’re still run-and-tail-slap affairs, which gets repetitive fast. If you’re someone who hates being punished for tiny mistakes, this might frustrate you. And if you’re looking for a modern take on the genre, it’s not going to deliver. It’s very much “here’s a classic, polished up.”

Bottom line

If you’re into retro platformers or just want a solid, nostalgic experience with extra depth, Croc Legend of the Gobbos for Nintendo Switch is worth the download. It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s lovingly done. Fans of old-school side-scrollers will appreciate the care put into the remaster, especially the Crocipedia. New players should give it a try too - it’s not too long, and the charm holds up. Just don’t expect modern polish everywhere. But hey, sometimes you want something that feels like it came out of a Game Boy cartridge, but looks great on your TV. That’s exactly what this is.
