The good stuff

First off, the interface is clean and actually feels intentional, not like a 2003 Flash site. You can load up any core - like QuickNES for NES or Beetle PSX for PlayStation - and it just works. I was able to get my old Super Metroid save file running in under ten minutes. The controller mapping is surprisingly intuitive, and once you set up your buttons, it remembers across games. Plus, the ability to tweak things like aspect ratio, frame rate, and even filter shaders gives you that authentic CRT look if you're into that. I ran a shader pack that made my old Game Boy games look like they were playing on a real screen from 1998 - it’s weirdly satisfying.

The not-so-good

But yeah, it’s not perfect. The learning curve is real - especially when you first open it and see a million options. I spent an hour trying to figure out why my sound kept cutting out, only to realize I had the audio buffer set too low. It’s not beginner-friendly at all unless you’re willing to read some guides. Also, the lack of built-in ROM management means you have to keep your files organized manually. And if you’re not careful, you might end up loading a random BIOS file by accident - which can be a pain to fix. Not a dealbreaker, but definitely something to watch for.

Bottom line

If you’re serious about retro gaming on Mac and don’t mind a bit of setup, RetroArch for Mac - Download for Mac is worth it. It’s free, it’s flexible, and it handles way more systems than OpenEmu does without needing extra downloads. Just know it’s not a “plug and play” thing - you’ll need to tinker a little.
