XFOIL - Download

The not-so-good

Yeah, it’s not exactly user-friendly. No mouse controls, no visual feedback unless you manually plot things. You have to know what you’re doing already - like, “how do I even start?” isn’t a question you can ask here. There’s no built-in airfoil library either, so you’re typing in coordinates by hand or importing them from somewhere else. And don’t expect tooltips or help menus. If you’re new to computational aerodynamics, you’ll probably want to pair it with a tutorial or two. Also, since it’s command-line based, there’s no way to save your session easily. One typo and you’re back to square one.

Bottom line

If you’re serious about airfoil design and don’t mind digging into the weeds, XFOIL - Download for Windows is worth the download. It’s not for beginners, but for anyone who needs precise, hands-on airflow data without paying for commercial software, it’s a legit tool. Free, functional, and still used by pros.
